Technology can be a game changer when it comes to your operations, however it’s important to make sure it is working for you and not the other way around. Too often contractors get boxed in by technology choices and their business is not able to thrive because of it. To learn how to avoid this, Lynsey Hull of Tyelus and Heidi J. Ellsworth of The Coffee Shops™ sat down for an episode of Operational Clarity all about developer-agnostic solutions.
What is a developer-agnostic tech solution? Developer-agnostic refers to the idea that the technological solution you implement is not reliant upon a single developer. Instead, you want to be able to pivot between developers at any give point in time. Lynsey explained why you want this:
A lot of the times, if you have a consultant that's also a developer, they're going to sell you a solution that they've developed. And because they developed it, they understand its architecture and it will lock you into working with them. Because it would cost you three, four, maybe even ten times as much to work with someone that’s not them.
The base of building something developer-agnostic is building out requirements. In other words, making sure you have documentation of how to use the system or solution so that anyone can step in and work on it. Lynsey put it simply, “You want to make sure the system’s requirements are documented by everyone who works on it so that the next developer that comes along knows where they are and where to start.”
The team at Tyelus loves helping their clients build out these types of solutions. Lynsey shared how they approach it, “When we build that developer-agnostic solution, it's about having the solution first and building the digital processes out of that. So, for management, it might feel slow to start because we’re taking time to learn the architecture of your business and understand the way your people work, but the result is companies get a digital system that supports their precise needs.”
