Choosing reliable flashing for when temperatures drop

Choosing reliable flashing for when temperatures drop

By The Coffee Shops®.

How a hybrid adhesive system combines cold-weather adhesion, high-temperature stability and cost-conscious performance.

Choosing window and door flashing requires contractors to balance performance, application temperature and cost. Generally, contractors have two common options: styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) asphalt, butyl and acrylic adhesive systems, each with advantages and limitations.

Butyl and acrylic products typically have low minimum application temperatures, making them suitable for colder conditions. However, they are generally the most expensive options and can become extremely pliable when exposed to elevated temperatures. This may cause some products to slump or lose effective adhesion to the substrate.

SBS asphalt products offer a less expensive alternative and perform well in higher temperatures. In cold weather, however, the asphalt adhesive can become brittle and lose some of its adhesive properties.

With neither of these options delivering true versatility, MFM developed a cost-effective solution to close this market gap. The patented PowerBond® adhesive system combines the properties of SBS asphalt and butyl in one solution. The hybrid, two-part adhesive system was created through the work of the company’s production and research and development personnel.

WindowWrap PowerBond® can be installed at temperatures as low as 25 degrees Fahrenheit, or minus 4 degrees Celsius. It is designed to adhere aggressively in cold conditions while remaining stable at elevated temperatures. The product also offers price savings compared with butyl and acrylic options without sacrificing performance values.

Additional features include a 15-year warranty, International Code Council approval and certification to American Architectural Manufacturers Association 711-22. WindowWrap PowerBond is available in 3-, 4-, 6- and 9-inch by 100-foot rolls for contractor or retail packaging. It is also available for sill pans, curved shapes and irregular openings in 6- and 9-inch by 50-foot rolls by utilizing WindowWrap FlexPowerBond in these applications.
