For Geoff Mitchell, CEO of Mid-South Roof Systems and partnering with Terial, technology has been a part of his roofing career since the start. He joined the roofing company 30 years ago after the founder purchased a computer and needed someone to help figure out what to do with it. With an early passion for computers and an information technology degree ahead of him, Geoff became the company’s de facto IT department while also learning about the many moving parts of managing a commercial roofing business.
That background gave him a practical view of what software can and cannot do for contractors. Geoff noted, “I think one of the biggest challenges facing construction in general, roofing contractors specifically, is the gap between software and real life.” Even the best tools still depend on people to work well.
For Mid-South, that meant looking for a software that fit the company’s workflows rather than forcing the team to bend around a platform. Geoff said some systems become cumbersome as they grow, either because of feature creep or because they attempt to do too much across too many parts of a business.
That adaptability is what made Terial stand out. Mid-South uses the platform for service management, customer relationship management and estimate management, including pipeline visibility. Geoff said the ability to analyze upcoming work by vertical, customer and revenue source has been especially powerful.
Ease of use also matters in the field. Geoff described the importance of making software simple for service technicians working long days in difficult conditions. He noted, “We should definitely be making it easier and better.”
Looking ahead, Geoff said he appreciates that the Terial team is receptive to input, communicates updates and continues to evolve. His advice to other contractors considering new technology is to understand their existing process, know where software may or may not fit, secure management commitment and create a strong adoption plan. Geoff reflected, “Software is obviously, at the end of the day, supposed to be a tool that helps you do more things better.”
