How TDP-1 strengthens roofing adhesion testing

How the TDP-1 Standard provides a consistent method for evaluating the adhesion strength of roofing materials. 

Understanding material testing standards and their results can be a bit confusing at first. In a recent article, the Single Ply Roofing Industry (SPRI), provides a simple breakdown of the TDP-1 Standard and how it impacts product testing. The TDP-1 Standard, officially titled, “Test Standard for Comparative Adhesion Strengths of Waterproofing Membranes, Membrane Adhesives and Board Stock Materials Used with Low Slope Roofing Systems,” was developed to provide a reliable and repeatable method for measuring those bond strengths through a specialized tear drop peel test. 

The TDP-1 Standard focuses on determining the maximum failure load; the highest force reached before an adhesive bond fails. Drawing on “Peel or Stripping Strength of Adhesive Bonds” (ASTM D903), the standard is designed to help qualify individual roofing components and assess material compatibility while reducing the need for larger and more costly roof assembly testing. 

The testing process follows a structured methodology intended to deliver objective results. Waterproofing membranes are prepared in consistent strip sizes, while board stock materials such as insulation board, cover board, plywood and oriented strand board (OSB) are cut to fit the test apparatus. Materials are conditioned in a controlled laboratory environment before assembly. 

Once assembled according to manufacturers’ guidelines, specimens are tested using a calibrated tensile machine that applies a perpendicular load at a constant rate. During testing, technicians record the maximum failure load as well as the mode of failure, which may include adhesive failure, cohesive failure or delamination. 

A key feature of the TDP-1 Standard is its emphasis on thorough reporting. Test reports document specimen details, preparation conditions, equipment calibration information, failure loads, failure modes and any deviations from the procedure. Statistical analysis and supporting images may also be included when required. 

The standard has become a valuable tool for comparative testing, component qualification and product development. By allowing manufacturers and testing laboratories to evaluate material combinations on a smaller scale, TDP-1 helps identify promising systems before committing to extensive assembly testing. The result is a more efficient, transparent and consistent approach to assessing roofing material performance.
