In our third episode of Operation Clarity with Lynsey Hull, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Lynsey to talk about navigating our data-saturated world. As the CEO of Tyelus, Lynsey offers powerful insights into how leveraging processes is key to building a strong business. He opened by explaining one of the most common issues he sees people face when growing their business:
People grow too fast and then all of a sudden, they’re scrambling to put processes in place. And each team in a company does this, so marketing is solving their problem for today, and finance is solving their problem for today, and production is solving their problem for today, and now you've got nine tools, data everywhere and a disconnected team.
The result of the disconnection? Your team is then unable to put it all together to make the big picture and build towards your larger business goals.
So, how do you avoid this? Take the time to identify core issues, rather than daily challenges. Lynsey gave an example of what this might look like, sharing, “You identify core problems when you see the same issue pop up across different departments. So, maybe you can't get a monthly report on your KPIs from marketing, sales and production. That tells you there’s probably a core issue in how that data is getting collected.”
Once you have identified your core issues, it’s time to try and build a solution. This is another place where business owners often misstep. Lysney explained:
You want to take the time to invest in what the requirements are of this solution are, not the solution itself. In other words, you want to make sure you aren’t relying on one piece of technology to solve all your issues; you instead want to invest in your people and internal processes. Because tools come and go in this industry, it's your team and business that should be your foundation.
The most crucial part of Lynsey's advice is time. As he put it, “You have to be willing to take the time to really look at your company as a whole. Because if you don't take the time to do that, if you need it done now, now, now, now, now, because investors' reports are coming up, you won’t be able to make meaningful change that helps you build a scalable, solid foundation for your business.”
