During National Roofing Week, the National Women in Roofing Oregon Council helped coordinate a roof replacement for a Portland homeowner in need.

For the past three years, the National Women in Roofing (NWIR) Oregon Council has partnered with Catalyst NW during National Roofing Week to provide complimentary roofs for community members in need. This year, the council’s effort brought together contractors, manufacturers, distributors and industry partners to replace the roof of Maria George’s home in Northeast Portland.

Maria’s home had multiple active leaks and had been tarped several times over the past year, according to information shared by Rachel Garcia of Malarkey Roofing Products®, chair of the NWIR Oregon Council. Her insurance carrier had also set a May deadline for the roof to be replaced or she would face cancellation of her policy, though that deadline was extended. Because of the roof’s steep pitch, the project was not well-suited for a traditional volunteer-based Catalyst build.

The workday became a clear example of the collaboration the roofing industry can create when companies set aside competition to focus on service. Stephanie Baird of Oregon Roofing Co said this year’s project had more roofers involved than ever before.

“Seeing contractors, manufacturers, distributors and industry partners come together with a shared purpose — without competition, without agendas and focused solely on helping someone else — is truly inspiring,” Stephanie said. “For one day, company names and logos took a back seat to teamwork, generosity and service.”

The project included more than 25 people throughout the day, with at least 13 working on the roof and others handling cleanup on the ground. Rachel said the roof had five or six layers that needed to be removed, including cedar shingles. Maria’s grandchildren also came outside to express their gratitude to the volunteers.

For Melissa Hill of Snyder Roofing, the most meaningful moment came when a neighbor stopped while walking her dog and shared how deserving Maria was of the new roof.

“She said they both have lived in the area a long time and that she is always taking care of someone at that house,” Melissa said. “It was her turn to be taken care of.”

            class=''

Learn how rubberized asphalt technology improves durability, flexibility and sustainability in roofing systems.

Roof performance begins long before the first shingle is installed. It begins at the material level, where the ability to withstand impact, temperature swings and long-term exposure determines how a system performs over time. For contractors and homeowners facing more frequent and severe weather events, that reality is driving a shift away from traditional oxidized asphalt toward polymer-modified alternatives engineered for resilience. Malarkey Roofing Products® has positioned itself within that shift through its use of NEX® Polymer Modified (SBS Rubberized) Asphalt.

The approach targets a known limitation in conventional shingles. Oxidized asphalt is hardened through high heat, a process that creates initial rigidity but leaves the material prone to brittleness as it ages. Over time, ultraviolet exposure and temperature fluctuations can accelerate cracking, weaken granule adhesion and reduce overall protection.

By introducing styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymers into the asphalt, that performance profile changes. The material becomes more flexible and rubber-like, allowing it to absorb stress rather than fracture under it. This distinction is most visible in severe weather, where impact resistance becomes critical. As Alex Buker of Red Beard Roofing explained, “Malarkey is the only company with all their shingle lines made of SBS rubberized asphalt. We use them because they’re way more durable when it comes to hail and wind. I’ve personally seen roofs we’ve installed in the past withstand baseball hail with no damage.”

That same flexibility extends beyond impact events into everyday performance. Shingles are able to expand and contract with temperature changes without becoming brittle in cold conditions or deforming in extreme heat. At the same time, the material’s adhesive properties help maintain granule retention, preserving the protective surface layer and slowing ultraviolet degradation.

Field observations reinforce those outcomes. Reflecting on post-storm inspections, Clayton Shearman of Shearman Roofing and Construction said, “I inspected about 80 roofs in Cheyenne (it seems like the Malarkey capital) after last year's hailstorm. Golf ball and bigger hail, about 30-40 of those roofs were Malarkey. Man, those things are very, very tough, even as they age.”

Performance, however, is only part of the equation. By incorporating upcycled rubber and plastics into the asphalt mix, the material also contributes to reducing landfill waste, aligning durability with broader sustainability goals.

Together, these developments reflect a larger shift in roofing, one that prioritizes materials engineered to perform consistently under stress while supporting long-term environmental responsibility.

A look at the Oregon National Women in Roofing Council’s recent calendar.

Recently, the Oregon Council of National Women in Roofing (NWIR) sent out a snapshot of their recent and upcoming events – and they are certainly keeping busy!

On April 21, they hosted their 2026 annual member drive, which was a resounding success. The theme of the event was luau and attendees enjoyed a fun, festive afternoon full of prizes and new connections. It was an especially good evening for Tracie Reyes with Superior Roofing, who won the event’s grand raffle prize — a $1,500 Hawaiian Airlines gift card! Overall, it was a great way for the Oregon Council to kick off the spring and get ready for what’s coming in the rest of the year as they continue to build their community.

Then on May 12, 2026, the Oregon Council worked with SRS Distribution to give their NWIR members a special opportunity – a Hands-On James Hardie training at SRS Distribution Inc. in Clackamas! Trainers at this event walked through everything from siding best practices and installation tips to industry insights and more!

And just three days after that event, on May 15, 2026, the council was tabling at the Oregon Tradeswomen Career Fair! This event is about introducing women to the apprenticeship and trade opportunities and saw thousands of students, jobseekers and employers come together to network and connect.

And looking forward, they’re not slowing down! The next big event on the Oregon Council’s calendar is a community service project on June 9, 2026. Held in conjunction with National Roofing Week, this event is the free reroof for a family in Portland, Oregon. The entire project is made possible by donations from NWIR members and industry companies, like Malarkey Roofing Products, Owens Corning, Bliss Roofing, ABC Supply and SRS Distribution. If you want to get involved, there’s still time. You can sign up to donate to the project or send questions to stephaniebaird@comcast.net.

This roofing contractor helped a homeowner replace a hail-damaged roof with a high-performance system before winter weather arrived.

A routine roof inspection in Bigfork, Montana, turned into a major roofing replacement project after contractors uncovered hail damage severe enough to threaten the home ahead of winter. The project, originally featured by Malarkey Roofing Products®, highlights how early inspections and high-performance roofing systems can help homeowners avoid costly cold-weather failures.

Sisu Roofing, based in Kila, Montana, was initially called to inspect the property before seasonal weather conditions worsened. During the inspection, the contractor discovered damage that had compromised the integrity of the existing roof and recommended pursuing an insurance claim before winter arrived.

“We were called out for a roof inspection before winter. We found hail damage on their roof and got an insurance claim started. They had their claim accepted, and a new Malarkey Vista® roof on before the snow started flying,” said Ben Wuollet, owner and founder of Sisu Roofing.

For contractors working in regions with freeze-thaw cycles, identifying hidden hail damage before temperatures drop can be critical. According to the original project profile, damaged shingles can trap moisture that later expands during freezing conditions, eventually leading to leaks and additional structural problems.

The replacement project covered approximately 73 squares and utilized Vista® shingles in the Black Oak colorway. Sisu Roofing sourced materials through MacArthur Company in Columbia Falls, Montana. The roofing system features NEX® Polymer Modified Asphalt, which is designed to improve impact resistance and granule adhesion compared to traditional asphalt shingles.

The project also reflected growing interest in roofing products that combine durability with sustainability. According to Malarkey, the shingles incorporate upcycled tires and plastic bags into the manufacturing process to improve flexibility and performance while reducing landfill waste.

Crews completed the installation before the first major snowfall, providing the homeowner with a new roofing system designed to better withstand future storms and harsh winters.

This reroofing project prioritized impact resistance and weather performance for a 24/7 emergency facility.

When a 24/7 emergency facility like Fire Station 51 in Canyon Lake, Texas, requires a roof replacement, performance and durability are nonnegotiable. After incurring significant hail damage, the department sought a roof system upgrade that could withstand the extreme heat, hail and tropical storm conditions.

Superb Roofing & Restoration completed the 158-square tear-off and replacement while the fire station remained fully operational. To ensure long-term protection and reliability, the project team selected a complete roofing system from Malarkey Roofing Products®, including the following:

Malarkey Vista® AR architectural shingles (Weathered Wood color)

Malarkey Smart Start® starter shingles

Arctic Seal® ice & water barrier (self-adhering underlayment)

Together, these components created a cohesive system designed to protect one of the community’s most mission-critical assets.

“I can say this project meant a lot to our entire team. Supporting our first responders — who do so much for the community — was a privilege we don’t take lightly. We’re grateful for the trust placed in us and proud to know the fire station now has a roof built to stand strong through whatever comes next,” said Josh Janczewski, owner of Superb Roofing & Restoration.

Why Vista® AR?

Vista® AR is a high-performance architectural shingle engineered using NEX® polymer-modified asphalt for greater impact resistance than traditional asphalt. It’s UL 2218 Class 4 rated — the highest impact rating possible. Vista® also includes 3M™ copper granules to reduce black streaks caused by algae growth. IBHS (Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety) testing confirms that polymer-modified shingles like Vista® also offer superior resilience to wind-driven rain and extreme temperatures. For a fire station that sees intense sun exposure, high-humidity mornings and seasonal hail threats, this combination matters.

“The best way to protect a mission-critical building like a fire station is with a roofing system that can handle South Texas heat, hail and heavy storms. Malarkey Vista® AR shingles come with algae-resistant roofing granules that inhibit algae growth and streaking — essential for preserving appearance and performance,” said.

Josh also noted that the roof replacement was triggered by hail damage through insurance. The objective wasn’t simply restoration, it was prevention:

“We’re going to a Class 4 impact-resistant Malarkey Vista® AR shingle. They’re smog-resistant shingles, and they are polymer-based, so they are very impact-resistant when it comes to hail. The goal is not to have this happen to them again,” he added.

Arctic Seal® — Protection where it matters most

Every roof has vulnerable transition points: valleys, around skylights and vents, roof-to-wall seams and perimeter edges. These are the places where water finds its opportunity to penetrate a roof.

Arctic Seal® is a self-adhering ice & water barrier that uses NEX® polymer-modified asphalt. NEX® provides higher tear strength and better adhesion than conventional felt. Arctic Seal® helps block water intrusion exactly where it most commonly occurs.

RidgeFlex® hip & ridge shingles

The ridge is the most exposed location on a roof. It is also the area most frequently impacted by hailstones, wind uplift and airborne debris. RidgeFlex® ridge shingles use the same NEX® polymer-modified asphalt technology, 3M™ Scotchgard™ Protector algae-resistant granules, and are also UL 2218 Class 4 rated. These features provide a stronger defense at the roof’s highest stress points.

Project scope

Superb Roofing & Restoration began the project with a full roof tear-off down to the bare decking. Once exposed, the crew re-nailed the existing deck to ensure fastener security and replaced any damaged boards. Then, underlayment was laid down, followed by Arctic Seal® installed in valleys and around penetrations to protect the roof’s most vulnerable areas.

Drip edge flashing was installed along all rakes and eaves to help control water runoff. Smart Start® starter shingles were placed along the base and rake edges to begin the shingle courses. This set the stage for the field shingles to follow.

In total, the crew installed 453 bundles of Vista® AR shingles. Then, they capped all hips and ridges with 12 bundles of RidgeFlex® hip and ridge shingles. A total of 45 ridge vents were installed to ensure proper attic airflow and moisture control. Once all components were in place, Superb sealed all roof penetrations and vents, then painted and finished the vent components — both for corrosion resistance and improved curb appeal.

Built for service — Not just shelter

A fire station roof is not just a roof. It’s part of the continuity of emergency response. Superb Roofing & Restoration delivered a system designed for the real weather realities of Canyon Lake — and Malarkey is proud to be part of this public-service asset’s long-term resilience story.

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

Malarkey Roofing Products and GreenMantra Technologies collaborate to build resilient shingles.

The collaboration between Malarkey Roofing Products and GreenMantra Technologies represents a transformative shift in the roofing industry, merging high-performance engineering with advanced circular economy principles. By integrating GreenMantra’s innovative molecular recycling technology into Malarkey’s manufacturing process, the two companies have created a sustainable model that diverts material from waste streams into a valuable ingredient for modern roofing.

Roof protection from second-life plastics

It begins with GreenMantra’s ability to transform hard-to-recycle plastics — such as single-use bags and bottle caps — into specialty synthetic waxes and polymers. Malarkey incorporates these upcycled materials into its proprietary NEX® Polymer Modified Asphalt. Unlike traditional oxidized asphalt, which can become brittle over time, this rubberized blend uses recycled polymers to enhance the shingle’s flexibility, impact resistance and granule adhesion.

Tangible environmental impact

This partnership allows Malarkey Roofing Products to divert massive amounts of waste from landfills and oceans. Every 30 squares of a Malarkey roof (an average-sized home) upcycles the equivalent of approximately 3,200 plastic bags and five rubber tires. To date, at enterprise scale, the roofing manufacturer has diverted 5.9 billion plastic bags and 9 million rubber tires from the waste stream since working with GreenMantra. See Malarkey’s 2026 Sustainability Report for more information. By replacing a portion of virgin plastic and raw asphalt with GreenMantra’s recycled additives, Malarkey significantly reduces its environmental footprint while maintaining a Class 4 roofing shingle impact rating — the highest in the industry.

Durability meets sustainability

This synergy proves that eco-friendly choices do not require a compromise in quality. GreenMantra Technologies provides some "building blocks" that allow Malarkey shingles to withstand extreme weather, including high winds and hail, for decades. Together, they are not just making shingles; they are pioneering a cleaner, longer-lasting future for the sustainable roofing market.

Roofing fit for the Rockies

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By Malarkey Roofing Products.

Malarkey Roofing Products delivers durability and value for a large alpine reroofing project.

In the heart of Canmore, Alberta, where elevation, heavy snowfall and dramatic freeze-thaw cycles test every roofing system, performance is not optional. Roofing materials installed here must withstand rapid temperature swings, intense sun exposure and prolonged winter conditions year after year.

That reality made the Eagle Ridge reroofing project a true showcase for Malarkey Roofing Products®. Located at more than 4,400 feet in the Canadian Rockies, Canmore presents an environment where standard asphalt shingles can fall short. For this large-scale community reroof, Epic Roofing & Exteriors, the company contracted for the project, knew that durability, impact resistance and cold-weather flexibility were critical. Malarkey’s NEX® polymer-modified asphalt technology offered a proven solution designed to maintain performance in extreme climates, making it a strong fit for a project where reliability matters as much as appearance.

Why Malarkey?

“The customer chose Malarkey Vista® for its Class 4 benefits in cooler weather. Canmore goes through significant freeze/thaw cycles, and having a shingle that retained its performance through these cycles was important. They were looking for a shingle that would perform longer than a non-SBS shingle,” said Allan Lambie, sales manager at Epic Roofing & Exteriors, which has installed Malarkey roofing products since 2003.

“In our market, we typically see clients choosing a Class 4 shingle for impact resistance considerations, but for this client, it was the continued performance through the freeze/thaw cycles. We recommended this shingle because it met their performance needs while giving great value from a pricing perspective,” he added.

Allan’s team installed Vista® roofing shingles in the Antique Brown color blend. They also used Malarkey accessories including Smart Start® starter shingles, EZ-Ridge® hip and ridge shingles and Secure Start® Lite Underlayment.

Secure Start® Lite is Malarkey’s most economical underlayment. It is a lightweight, synthetic underlayment providing a layer of moisture protection over the entire roof and is suitable for use under fire-rated, code-compliant roof coverings. Secure Start® Lite works well under asphalt shingles, wood shakes/shingles, metal, slate and mechanically fastened roof tiles. Secure Start® Lite’s non-woven surface layer provides a slip-resistant walking surface and makes steep slope roofing installations safer in all weather conditions.

Challenges

In addition to the travel from Calgary, where Epic is based, to Canmore, an hour’s drive away, planning for on-site management and material deliveries had to be confidently secured, according to Allan.

Narrow access to the site also proved challenging, and the close quarters of the units required additional safety considerations. This meant there were many entry points for the Epic team to protect.

“With many client vehicles on site, we needed to be flexible with material deliveries and bin placements for debris removal,” said Allan.

“Protecting the site with tarps, fencing and signage kept everyone safe. Communication with the property manager and the relatively high number of residents can always be tricky. Having a clear process for critical communication distribution made sure all parties were well informed as the project progressed,” he added.

The Epic crew also updated all the venting for each unit and replaced the 20-year-old sun-tunnels in addition to re-roofing.

Eco-offset

In such a stunning natural environment, making sustainable material choices is also important. 3M™ Smog-Reducing Granules on Malarkey roofing shingles help keep mountain air fresh from pollutants. Given the scale of this project, the Eco-Offset stats are especially notable:

89 approximate rubber tires diverted from the landfill.

56.6K approximate plastic bags diverted from the landfill (tires and plastic bags are upcycled into the formula for Malarkey’s SBS rubberized asphalt shingles).

35 approximate trees ‘planted’ to help clean the air (with smog-reducing shingles, each roof has the smog-fighting capacity of two to three trees).

Now, months after the reroofing project was completed, these roofs are combating freeze and thaw cycles between periods of cold storms and bright alpine sun. Regardless of the conditions, Eagle Ridge residents can rest assured that Malarkey’s Vista® shingles and accessories, installed by local, experienced professional roofing contractors, were the right choice.
