Strategic material staging and supplier partnerships can be the difference between a profitable project and costly delays.

In roofing, the old adage that “time is money” couldn’t be truer. As Ashley Pietsch of Integrity Insurance and Bonding puts it, “After years of working alongside roofing contractors, I have seen that the owners who achieve long-lasting growth are the ones who master time management and embrace delegation.”

In response to the emphasis the industry places on the importance of time, contractors are incorporating new digital programs and roofing tools to help improve their efficiency in both the field and the office. But one area that is often forgotten when it comes to streamlining the roofing process happens between the two – material staging, sequencing and timing.

Getting materials to the jobsite might seem simple in comparison to trying to accurately quote a project or install products tens of feet in the air, but it is more complex than you might assume at first glance. As Nick Fryer writes for Roads and Bridges, “Jobsite staging doesn’t just shape where equipment and materials get stored. It also affects the overall workflow. Done poorly, it can lead to several issues that quietly drain construction budgets.” These issues can include material damage, safety hazards and frustrated crew members.

What can you do to avoid these material staging issues? Partner with the right supplier. As the writers behind RoofCon put it, “The movement of materials from delivery to installation represents one of the biggest opportunities for efficiency gains in roofing projects. Creating a smooth flow requires careful coordination between suppliers, delivery crews and roofing teams.”

This type of coordination is something that the team at SRS Distribution prioritizes. Their team is well-aware of the often-limited space contractors are working with on their projects and have a variety of strategies already in place to help with staging and sequencing materials:

Supportive team: SRS Distribution territory managers are always ready to help! Whether it’s consultations on products, sales insights or helping you figure out how to stage a jobsite, they are there for you.

Extensive product selection: Your local branch will already be well stocked with the best commercial products from manufacturers like Carlisle, Johns Manville, GAF, Elevate and Versico. And if they don’t have it on site, they can get it there from one of their 200+ other locations!

A powerful delivery network: At SRS Distribution, they have their own fleet of trucks and knuckle booms that keep project deliveries on track! Some SRS Distribution locations are even equipped with will-call programs that make sure that contractors get the right products when they need them.

Overall, working with a supplier like SRS Distribution that understands the limited space on jobsites and the importance of properly staging materials is key to saving time and money on your projects.

Reviewing insurance coverage halfway through the year can help individuals, families and businesses account for recent changes and emerging risks.

Integrity Insurance & Bonding Inc. notes that the middle of the year offers a natural opportunity to pause and evaluate whether insurance coverage still reflects current needs. Life and business conditions can change quickly and policies that were adequate six months ago may no longer provide the expected protection.

For individuals and families, a mid-year review can help identify changes that may require policy updates. Purchasing a new vehicle, completing home renovations, acquiring valuable personal property or experiencing a major life event can affect insurance needs. Reviewing coverage before a claim occurs may help prevent unexpected gaps or limitations.

Business owners should also evaluate whether their insurance programs have kept pace with company growth. Hiring employees, purchasing equipment, expanding operations or entering new contracts can change an organization’s risk profile. A review provides an opportunity to confirm that liability limits, property values, payroll estimates and vehicle schedules remain accurate.

Emerging risks also deserve attention. Cyber threats, rising construction costs and increasing litigation expenses continue to affect individuals and businesses. Understanding how these developments may influence coverage can support more informed decisions before a loss occurs. Insurance should not be treated as a set-it-and-forget-it purchase. Effective insurance programs evolve alongside personal and professional goals. Regular reviews can help ensure policies continue to provide the protection policyholders expect.

Integrity Insurance and Bonding recommends taking a proactive approach. Those who have not reviewed their policies within the past year or who have recently experienced significant changes may benefit from speaking with an insurance advisor to determine whether their coverage is still aligned with their needs.

Why COIs matter

Strong certificate management can help contractors and trade businesses reduce risk, document coverage and protect financial stability.

For contractors and trade businesses, certificates of insurance (COIs) can seem like routine paperwork; something exchanged before a job begins, filed away and rarely revisited. But Integrity Insurance & Bonding emphasizes that when subcontractors or vendors are part of a project, properly managing those certificates becomes an important layer of protection against unexpected liability and financial loss.

Businesses across construction, landscaping, logging, brewing, salon services and other service-based industries take on additional risk when they hire outside companies. A COI helps verify that those businesses carry active insurance coverage, including liability and workers’ compensation protection. Without that verification, a company may be relying on assumptions instead of documentation.

That gap can become costly when something goes wrong. If a subcontractor causes property damage, an injury occurs or an uninsured employee is involved in an accident, the hiring business may also become part of the claim. In those situations, missing or outdated documentation can complicate the response and create expensive consequences.

Insurance carriers are also placing greater emphasis on subcontractor management. Many insurers now ask how businesses verify coverage, track certificate expiration dates and manage written agreements. Inconsistent procedures or poor documentation can affect insurance costs and coverage options, making certificate management a business issue as much as an administrative one.

Strong COI practices do not have to be complicated. Businesses should collect updated certificates before work begins, confirm that coverage limits meet project requirements and use written contracts that clearly outline responsibilities and insurance expectations. Organized records are also essential, and digital tracking systems can help monitor expiration dates and prevent gaps in documentation throughout the year.

Certificates of insurance may appear to be a small administrative detail, but they play a meaningful role in reducing risk and supporting long-term stability.

Insurance volatility and how it's affecting roofing operations

Rising premiums and tighter underwriting are pushing contractors to strengthen risk management and documentation.

Roofing contractors are operating in an increasingly constrained insurance market, where tightening conditions are reshaping both day-to-day operations and long-term planning. Insights from an article by Integrity Insurance & Bonding Inc. reflect how rising premiums, fewer carrier options and heightened underwriting scrutiny are placing sustained pressure on profitability and competitiveness across both residential and commercial sectors.

The convergence of risk and cost is at the core of this shift. Severe weather events continue to drive higher loss activity nationwide. At the same time, inflation has increased the cost of labor, materials and claims. As payouts climb, insurers are adjusting by raising premiums and narrowing their exposure, creating a more selective and demanding coverage landscape.

And those adjustments are already being felt. More contractors are seeing renewal increases between 10% and 30%, even if they have clean loss histories. For others, particularly those with prior claims, limited safety documentation or higher-risk operations, the outcome can be more severe, ranging from sharper premium hikes to nonrenewal.

Compounding the issue is a shrinking pool of willing carriers. According to Ashley Pietsch of Integrity Insurance, “Many insurers have tightened underwriting guidelines for roofing contractors, especially in states with storm activity or frequent litigation." In some cases, coverage is being restricted altogether for certain project types.

The implications extend well beyond insurance costs. “Higher insurance costs directly reduce profit margins and can make it harder to remain competitive when bidding jobs,” Ashley shared. At the same time, contractors are increasingly facing stricter contractual requirements from property owners, lenders and general contractors, who are demanding higher liability limits and more comprehensive documentation.

Still, contractors that take a proactive approach to risk are better positioned to navigate these conditions. Here are some practical steps according to Integrity Insurance:

Implement formal safety programs and document employee training

Verify subcontractor insurance coverage and maintain written agreements

Enforce fall protection, driver safety and equipment inspection protocols

Report claims promptly and address issues before they escalate

Maintain detailed records of payroll, job types and safety performance

Partner with insurance advisors who specialize in roofing

Preparation remains the most reliable safeguard, especially in a trade with so much risk involved. Contractors that demonstrate operational discipline and a strong safety culture are more likely to maintain coverage access and withstand ongoing market volatility.

A closer look at how one firm’s core principles guide client service, team culture and community impact.

In an industry defined by opportunity, precision and evolving standards, reliability is strengthened by both expertise and the consistency of the systems and values that guide decision-making. For contractors navigating insurance and bonding requirements, the principles shaping their partners’ approach play a meaningful role in how smoothly projects progress and how confidently growth opportunities are pursued. At Integrity Insurance & Bonding, that philosophy is expressed through four core principles, “Work Hard, Play Hard, Grow and Give Back,” which together create a clear and consistent framework for service, culture and long-term partnership.

That framework begins with a strong emphasis on accountability, where “Work Hard” is defined as an operational standard built on responsiveness, preparation and precision. Contractors regularly manage evolving project scopes and time-sensitive bonding requirements, all of which benefit from timely and accurate support. By prioritizing proactive communication and thoughtful preparation, the company helps streamline processes and deliver a level of service that supports long-term success and strong working relationships.

This commitment to execution is complemented by a deliberate investment in workplace culture. The principle of “Play Hard” reflects the understanding that sustained performance is supported by engagement, collaboration and morale. By integrating recognition, relationship-building and shared momentum into daily operations, the company fosters an environment where teams remain connected and effective, particularly in fast-paced project environments.

From there, the model extends into long-term development, where growth is viewed as a continuous and shared process. Internally, this includes ongoing investment in training, certifications and mentorship to strengthen both individual capability and team expertise. Externally, it involves helping contractors build strong operational foundations that support expansion and stability, enabling them to scale with confidence. Insurance and bonding, while often operating behind the scenes, play a vital role in supporting that progress and unlocking new opportunities.

Finally, the principle of “Give Back” connects business success to community impact. Through structured partnerships and ongoing contribution initiatives, the company supports the communities it serves while reinforcing a broader vision of success rooted in shared growth and responsibility.

Taken together, these principles form a cohesive and practical framework that guides daily decision-making, strengthens internal culture and supports lasting partnerships across the construction industry.

Integrity Insurance leaders explain how advocacy and service are reshaping contractor coverage.

At Western Roofing Expo 2025, conversations extended beyond products and systems to address a topic that impacts every roofing contractor: insurance. During a live interview on the show floor, Megan Ellsworth sat down with representatives from Integrity Insurance and Bonding to discuss how insurance can better support roofing businesses.

President Seth Pietsch shared his story of how he got into the industry by working for his father-in-law's insurance agency around 2009. “My father-in-law said, ‘Don't start going after roofing contractors on the insurance side.’ So I did,” Seth said. “It's been the best career decision I've ever made. The roofing industry is awesome. The people are awesome. I couldn’t be more thankful to be involved with associations and contributing back to the industry.”

Seth added that involvement in roofing associations like Western States Roofing Contractors Association (WSRCA) plays a key role in elevating the industry. “The contractors that are involved in associations are the companies that care about their industry,” Seth stated. “You're working with the best of the best.”

Connor Nemmert, who leads Integrity’s employee benefits department, highlighted how benefits have become an increasingly important challenge for contractors. “With the employee benefits, it's just a matter of having a product that's for your employee, that’s actually a true benefit,” Connor explained. “Find something that's valuable for the company but also a good value to the employee.”

From the commercial insurance side, Andy Brown outlined several recurring issues roofing contractors face. “One of the biggest things on the general liability side is having exclusions that they don't necessarily understand and making sure they know exactly what they're signing up for,” Andy shared. “You want to be able to have a certificate of insurance when you need it, and our goal is to knock that out within the hour.”

Beyond policies and paperwork, Seth said Integrity’s goal is to shift how contractors view insurance overall. “Historically, it's an inconvenience. Nobody wants to deal with it,” he said. “We’re letting contractors know that there are people who are on their side, who are advocates for the industry that are going above and beyond to help them.”
