style=' '  loading='lazy' />

In the latest ARMA Accident Prevention Contest, Owens Corning Roofing plants earned recognition in three categories.

Owens Corning Roofing plants across North America have earned safety recognition from the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) through its annual Accident Prevention Contest, an industry program that recognizes asphalt roofing plants with strong safety performance.

ARMA bases the honors on full-year safety data and criteria aligned with Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards.

Recognition across roofing

In the latest ARMA Accident Prevention Contest, Owens Corning Roofing plants earned recognition in three categories: multi-year excellence, perfect annual safety performance and year-over-year safety improvement.

Eight plants earned the Award of Excellence for achieving three consecutive years with zero safety incidents: Compton, California; Denver, Colorado asphalt; Kearny, New Jersey asphalt; Linnton, Oregon asphalt; Medina, Ohio asphalt; Memphis, Tennessee asphalt; Minneapolis, Minnesota asphalt; and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma asphalt.

Ten plants received Perfect Employee Safety Certificates for achieving a perfect score in the most recent reporting year: Compton, California; Compton, California asphalt; Denver, Colorado asphalt; Irving, Texas asphalt; Kearny, New Jersey asphalt; Linnton, Oregon asphalt; Medina, Ohio asphalt; Memphis, Tennessee asphalt; Minneapolis, Minnesota asphalt; and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma asphalt.

Eight plants earned Safety Improvement recognition for meaningful year-over-year progress in reducing incidents: Atlanta, Georgia; Brentwood, New Hampshire; Compton, California asphalt; Denver, Colorado; Houston, Texas; Irving, Texas asphalt; Memphis, Tennessee; and Minneapolis, Minnesota.

A visible example of Safer Together

Owens Corning’s Safer Together platform reflects the company’s belief that everyone shares responsibility for safety through care, awareness and everyday action. The ARMA recognition gives that commitment a clear example across roofing operations.

“Safety recognition matters because it reflects what employees do every day,” said Ken Creasy, Ph.D., vice president of Roofing operations, strategy, and supply chain. “Across Owens Corning plants, teams identify issues, share concerns, intervene when needed, follow critical procedures, and learn from one another. These actions help create workplaces where safety is practiced through daily decisions and behaviors.”

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) is now accepting submissions for its 2027 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards Program. Roofing contractors across North America can submit their best low- and steep-slope asphalt roofing projects completed within the past three years for a chance to win by December 1, 2026.

“Asphalt roofing continues to prove itself project after project, and we’re excited to see this year’s entries,” stated Reed Hitchcock, ARMA executive vice president. “Contractors are showing us systems that perform under real-world pressure, hold up to the elements and still look exceptional. That combination of durability and design is exactly why asphalt remains a top choice."

The program gives contractors a platform to highlight their work, build their professional reputation and connect with industry peers who share their passion for asphalt roofing.

There is no cost to enter, and contractors are welcome to submit multiple projects. Each entry should reflect strong asphalt roofing craftsmanship and include a detailed project write-up along with high-quality images or videos.

How does judging work?

After the submission window closes, a panel of experienced roofing industry judges will review and score each entry against four criteria.

Why asphalt: Why was asphalt the roofing solution? What circumstances existed with the building and what benefits made it clear that asphalt was the best roofing choice?

Project challenges: Were there any technical, operational or environmental challenges successfully overcome through the innovative use of asphalt roofing materials? Does the project demonstrate the reliability, durability and overall system strength of asphalt roofing?

Distinction: Why is this project different from its peers? Was the quality of the craftsmanship extraordinary and were there any circumstances, pre-existing conditions or challenges that made it stand out? Can this project be considered a step above the rest?

Beauty: Does the project showcase an aesthetic appeal or impressive technical complexity? Does it possess visual allure or intrigue, elevating the skyline, building use or design?

Medal Winners

Based on the judges' evaluations, the projects with the highest scores will receive Gold, Silver or Bronze medals.

Best-in-Class categories

Beyond the medal winners, judges may also recognize standout projects across five Best-in-Class Categories, each honoring one winner, with annual recognition at the judges’ discretion. This year, ARMA has introduced a new Sustainability category and expanded the Technical Difficulty category to include resilience and hardening considerations.

In the Neighborhood: This category showcases homes that combine affordability with style, highlighting how color and design choices can elevate the appearance of a typical neighborhood home.

Commercial/Mixed Use: This category focuses on the complexities of flat roof projects, which involve numerous components working together to create a water-resistant system for commercial, industrial, educational, data center, hospital, retail and other non-pitched roof applications. Entrants explain why asphalt was chosen and may highlight challenges overcome or the versatility of asphaltic products.

Craftsmanship: Roofing is an art, and it takes a true craftsman to install roofing materials on complex structures such as steeples, turrets and geodesic designs or on large flat roofing projects exceeding 1,000 squares. This category is open to both low- and steep-slope applications.

Technical Difficulty: This category emphasizes operational and installation challenges, including projects involving multiple penetrations, work during nighttime, skyscraper steeples, cold weather applications and resilience and hardening considerations, such as design, material selection and installation practices that help asphalt roofing systems perform against high winds, hail, heavy rainfall, temperature extremes and other disaster-related conditions.

Sustainability (NEW): This new category recognizes projects that demonstrate environmental stewardship across the lifecycle of an asphalt roofing system, from recycled content and shingle recycling programs to green roofs, LEED certification, cool roofing technologies and integrated solar or alternative energy systems. This category is open to both residential and commercial applications.

What do winners receive?

Top-scoring projects earn monetary prizes: $2,000 for Gold, $1,000 for Silver and $500 for Bronze. Every winning company receives an official ARMA certificate, promotional materials, trade media exposure and features on ARMA’s website and social media channels. Winners will also be recognized at the 2027 International Roofing Expo.

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

A coalition of industry trade associations representing contractors, consultants and manufacturers in the U.S. and Canada has completed its Quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing for the third quarter of 2025.

The survey is an industrywide effort spearheaded by a coalition of trade assocations, including the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, Canadian Roofing Contractors Association, Chemical Fabrics & Film Association Inc., EPDM Roofing Association, International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants, Metal Construction Association, Metal Roofing Alliance, National Roofing Contractors Association, National Women in Roofing, Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association, Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association and Single Ply Roofing Industry.

Seventy percent of survey responses came from roofing contractors, and 30% of responses came from roof consultants. Forty-eight percent of respondents indicated they primarily work on low-slope roof systems; 39% indicated they primarily work on a blend of low-slope and steep-slope roof systems; and 13% indicated they primarily work on steep-slope roof systems.

Participants who identify as roofing contractors were asked to report the number of squares of reroofing material installed by their companies during the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same quarter in 2025. Thirty-two percent of respondents reported the volume of reroofing materials installed increased, 32% reported no change and 36% reported a decrease in materials installed year-over-year.

Thirty-six percent of all survey respondents indicated their customer inquiries increased. Forty-three percent of respondents reported no change in activity, and 21% indicated a decrease. Project contracts increased for 33% of respondents, 40% reported no change in activity and 27% indicated a decrease in project contracts.

Additionally, two indices offer insight regarding customer inquiries and project contracts across market segments. The indices are based on a 0 to 100 scale. A score of 50 or higher suggests expansion or optimism; a score below 50 indicates contraction or pessimism.

The customer inquiries index score for the total industry increased to 57.1 compared with 39.0 for the fourth quarter of 2025. The score for the steep-slope reroofing market is 50, the score for the low-slope reroofing market is 59.1, and the score for the blended low- and steep-slope reroofing market is 57.1.

The project contracts index score for the total industry increased to 52.9 compared with 45.2 for the fourth quarter of 2025. The score for the steep-slope reroofing market is 50.0, the score for the low-slope reroofing market is 56.1, and the score for the blended low- and steep-slope reroofing market is 50.0.

As of April 2026, 26% of respondents reported no project backlogs, 40% indicated project backlogs of one to two months and 21% indicated backlogs of three to four months. Thirteen percent of respondents reported project backlogs of five or more months.

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

As the incoming vice president of technical services at ARMA, Estes is dedicated to supporting asphalt roofing manufacturers and advancing the technical performance of asphaltic materials.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) has named Heather Estes as its new vice president of technical services, effective April 13, 2026.

As vice president of technical services, Estes will serve as ARMA’s primary technical voice, assuring that asphalt roofing is accurately, equitably and appropriately represented in all scientific and technical discussions about residential and commercial roofing applications. She will manage all of ARMA’s technical-related activities and will also serve as the association’s technical liaison to organizations involved in the development of building standards.

“Heather is an excellent addition to ARMA’s leadership team,” said Reed Hitchcock, ARMA executive vice president. “Her experience with the organization and the industry will bring valuable perspective, insight and energy to our technical capabilities.”

Heather Estes is a technical leader with over 15 years of experience spanning the full lifecycle of roofing materials — from the laboratory to the manufacturing floor. A career "asphalt nerd" with an M.S. in chemistry from UNC-Wilmington, Estes began in forensic analysis, specializing in the chemistry of material failure.

She has spent the subsequent phase of her career bridging the gap between research and real-world application, championing durability and resiliency standards while mastering the complexities of manufacturing and product development. This unique perspective — combining hands-on testing, R&D and regulatory strategy — allows her to serve as a comprehensive technical advocate for the industry.

As the incoming vice president of technical services at ARMA, Estes is dedicated to supporting asphalt roofing manufacturers and advancing the technical performance of asphaltic materials. When she isn't advancing industry codes and standards, she is at home with her family, enjoying life's adventures with her husband, their son and their dogs.

“I have long admired ARMA’s commitment to technical excellence through my various industry roles, and I am honored to now lead those efforts from within,” Estes said. “Asphalt is in my DNA, and I am excited to advocate for the manufacturers who drive this industry forward, building on the phenomenal foundation Aaron Phillips has built over the years.”

Estes will work closely with the current vice president of technical services, Aaron Phillips, through his departure at the end of June to ensure a smooth transition of ARMA’s technical activities. ARMA will also continue to rely on the expertise and engagement of volunteers from its member companies to help advance the association’s technical initiatives.

Additionally, Hitchcock recognized Phillips for the legacy he built during his tenure with the association.

“Aaron has played an important role in advancing ARMA’s mission and ensuring asphalt roofing is well represented in key technical and regulatory conversations since joining the team in 2020,” Hitchcock said. “He has helped elevate ARMA’s technical voice across the industry while building strong relationships with partner organizations and stakeholders. We are grateful for his contributions and the lasting impact he has made on the association and the industry.”

Under Phillips’ leadership, ARMA has established a new standard for technical advocacy, engagement and education on behalf of ARMA members, while also working with ARMA’s professional staff to formalize internal processes and procedures.
